Garage door springs, cables, brackets, and other hardware attached to the springs are under very high tension and, if handled improperly, can cause serious injury. Only a qualified professional or a mechanically experienced person should adjust them, but only by carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions. The torsion springs (the springs above the door) should only be adjusted by a professional. Do not attempt to repair or adjust torsion springs yourself. A restraining cable or safety clips should be installed on the extension spring (the spring along the side of the door) to help contain the spring if it breaks.
WARNING! Springs are under high tension. Only qualified persons should adjust them. Take a few minutes to inspect and test your complete garage door system. Make monthly inspection and testing a part of your regular routine.
Stand inside the garage with the garage door in the closed position. Have a good look at the garage door springs, rollers, and mounting hardware, such as the hinges for signs of wear and tear or damage. Also look at the cables for signs of fraying. Make sure that the mounting hardware is adequately fastened, nothing should be loose. If something doesn’t look quite right – or doesn’t sound quite right – it could be the symptom of a more serious issue. We suggest you have the garage door checked by one of our service technicians.
If your door is installed with an automatic operator, close the door and disengage the operator. Once you are able to lift the door manually… Lift the door. It should lift smoothly with little resistance and should remain fully open. If it is difficult to open or does not remain fully open, the door may be off balance and should be serviced.
If your door is equipped with an automatic operator, have the door in the fully open position; push your remote or wall button to close the door. As the door is closing, place the palm of your hand/s at the bottom of the door and apply some resistance. If the door does not easily reverse and continues to close, pull your hands away immediately. The closing force is excessive and could do some harm. The door will need to be serviced if this scenario occurs.
Apply a small amount of spray lubricant such as Q20, or any other light oil lubricant to the door hinges, rollers, tracks, springs, cables and all other working parts that are subjected to wear and tear. It is advisable to lubricate the chain inside the shaft of the automatic operator. ?(NB!!! DO NOT USE GREASE AS A FORM OF LUBRICANT!)
If your garage door motor has a battery backup in case of a power failure, it is advisable to check on a weekly basis that the battery has sufficient power to avoid the inconvenience of being shut out of your garage. This is because the battery has a limited life span of approximately one year. In order to maximize the life span of the battery, we advise that it be run flat every two weeks. This is done by switching off the power to the motor and operating the door off the battery until it no longer operates. Then switch the power back on – this will re charge the battery.
Our springs are designed to the industry standard of 10 000 cycles (approx. 5 years). It is advisable to have the springs replaced at 5 year intervals to avoid the inconvenience of them breaking, which will result in you not being able to operate your door. Long life springs of 20 000 cycles are available on request at an additional cost.
